Course Summary:
Cartography
Cartography is the science, art, and technique of making maps. This course introduces learners to the fundamental principles, tools, and applications of cartography, enabling them to understand how spatial data is collected, represented, and communicated visually. Students explore both traditional and modern mapping techniques, from hand-drawn maps to computer-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The course covers topics such as map design, scale, projections, symbols, and the use of colors and legends to communicate geographic information effectively. Practical skills include the use of cartographic instruments, drawing tools, and digital software to create accurate and user-friendly maps.
By the end of the course, students are expected to:
Understand the principles and elements of map-making.
Apply techniques for accurate measurement and representation of geographic features.
Interpret and analyze maps for decision-making in fields such as geography, surveying, urban planning, and environmental studies.
Use modern cartographic tools, including GIS and remote sensing, to produce thematic and topographic maps.
